Medical term: Dysphagia

We have extensive experience assessing, diagnosing and offering specialist advice on swallowing management.

Difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing are very varied in nature, and there are many causes, including:

  • Co-ordination, weakness or spasm of the nerves or muscles needed for swallowing or breathing.
  • Changes to the structures of the mouth or throat.
  • Lack of sensation.
  • age related changes.
  • Difficulty recognising food, drink or the cutlery required to eat with.
  • Injury or surgery to the mouth or throat.
  • Age related changes.
  • Acid reflux.

It is important that you inform your GP immediately if you are having difficulties with swallowing.

What we offer

  • An initial assessment. This is to build a picture of the swallowing difficulties being faced by the client. An overview of initial findings and preliminary recommendations will be provided where possible, including potential further therapy options.
  • Comprehensive reports.
  • Client centred goal setting.
  • Reviews to monitor progress.
  • Where appropriate: diet modification plans, techniques, strategies, exercises and therapy for swallowing
  • Education and support to you and the people helping you with eating and drinking and understanding dysphagia.
  • Evidence based techniques.
